Strategic Hiring: Building the Team That Drives Maximum Performance

Thursday, June 18 at 1:00 PM EDT  •  60 Minutes  •  Zoom

Your strategy is only as strong as the team executing it. Research from McKinsey shows that top performers are 400% more productive than average employees in complex roles — and in senior positions, that gap widens to 800%. A 2023 SHRM study found that a single bad hire costs an average of $17,000–$240,000 when accounting for lost productivity, recruitment costs, and organizational disruption.

Yet most growing businesses hire reactively — filling seats rather than building capability. In this session we will examine the data-driven frameworks that elite organizations use to attract, evaluate, and retain high performers, and build the hiring architecture that turns your talent pipeline into a competitive advantage.

Issue Focus  ·  Strategic Communication & Leadership Influence

The Leader Who Communicates with Clarity Wins

How strategic communication transforms organizational alignment, trust, and execution — and the specific skills that separate influential leaders from merely busy ones.

Communication is not what you say. It is what your audience understands, believes, and chooses to act on. The most technically brilliant strategy will fail if it is poorly communicated. The most talented team will underperform if leadership communication creates confusion, fear, or disengagement. Strategic communication is not a soft skill — it is the most high-leverage leadership competency in your organization.

From the Desk of Jerry Covella

Clarity is Kindness — and It Is Competitive Strategy

Every communication breakdown I have witnessed inside an organization — from a misaligned team to a failed initiative to an unexpected resignation — had a communication failure at its root. Either the message was unclear, the delivery was mistimed, the channel was wrong, or the feedback loop was broken.

Communication is the Transmission of Leadership

Your vision, your values, your expectations, your culture — none of them exist in the organization until they are communicated. And not communicated once, in one direction, in one meeting. They must be communicated repeatedly, through multiple channels, with enough listening built in to confirm they have actually landed.

The leaders I have worked with who most underestimate the importance of communication are typically the most technically skilled. They assume that because the logic is airtight, the message will be received. Logic alone rarely moves people. Clarity, story, emotion, and relevance do.

“Leverage KPIs and systems that actually move the needle — but first, make sure your people understand why the needle matters.”

Core Strategies

5 Strategic Communication Principles for Leaders

01

Lead with the ‘Why’ Before the ‘What’

Simon Sinek popularized it, but most leaders still lead with the what. Before announcing a change, a new direction, or a difficult decision, invest the time to anchor the communication in purpose. Why does this matter? Why now? Why to this audience? The ‘why’ creates the context that makes the ‘what’ land.

02

Master the Communication Cascade

Information that is communicated once, top-down, is retained at roughly 10–15%. Information that is communicated through multiple levels, with discussion, questions, and reinforcement, is retained at 65–80%. Design your critical communications to cascade — brief your managers, who brief their teams, who discuss and confirm alignment.

03

Create Dialogue, Not Monologue

The most dangerous communication pattern in leadership is broadcast-only: leader talks, team listens, meeting ends. Productive strategic communication includes structured mechanisms for upward feedback, questions, and genuine two-way dialogue. If you are not getting pushback, questions, or concerns, the communication is not working.

04

Communicate Consistently Across Channels

Your most important messages must be delivered through multiple channels: in-person meetings, written updates, individual conversations, and operational systems. Inconsistency across channels — where the leader says one thing in a meeting and the slide deck says another — erodes trust faster than almost any other leadership behavior.

05

Manage Communication During Uncertainty

The communication discipline that most distinguishes elite leaders is what they do when they do not have answers. Most leaders go quiet during uncertainty — which nature abhors, filling the vacuum with rumor and fear. The best leaders communicate often during uncertainty, explicitly acknowledging what is known, what is unknown, and when they will have more information.

“The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place. Most organizations operate with a profound overestimate of how much their people actually understand.”

Executive Insight

Communication Audit: Are You Actually Getting Through?

When was the last time you verified that your strategy was understood — not just communicated?

Ask two or three people at different levels of your organization to describe the top three strategic priorities in their own words. The answers will tell you more about your communication effectiveness than any engagement survey.

Do you have a formal communication cascade for critical organizational messages?

If your critical messages are delivered once, from the top, in a single all-hands or email — they are not being heard the way you think they are. Design a communication architecture that ensures messages travel through every level with verification built in.

How do you manage the vacuum of uncertainty in your organization?

Every time you go silent during a difficult period, you are communicating something — just not what you intend. Map the last 90 days: were there periods of significant organizational uncertainty? What did you communicate, how often, and through what channels?

Are your individual communication styles aligned with the communication needs of your diverse team?

Different people receive information differently. Some need detail; others need headlines. Some prefer written formats; others need conversation. The leader who communicates in one style to all audiences is leaving alignment on the table.
